About this API

CELLAR is the semantic repository of the EU Publications Office, holding metadata and content for every document published on EUR-Lex — treaties, regulations, directives, decisions, and Court of Justice of the EU rulings — over 2.7 million documents as RDF data, searchable with the SPARQL query language.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an API key?

No, the public SPARQL endpoint is available without a key. Separate, fuller EUR-Lex web services require registration, but basic CELLAR search doesn't.

What data does this API return?

Metadata and full content of EU legal acts — numbers, dates, subject classifications, relationships between documents — as SPARQL query results in RDF/JSON/XML format.

Can this API be called directly from a browser?

No — the endpoint doesn't return CORS headers. On top of that, SPARQL syntax doesn't lend itself to a simple demo button — you need a real backend integration to use this API meaningfully.

Who runs this API?

The Publications Office of the European Union. Full documentation is available at eur-lex.europa.eu.
